Fish
Fish are such an integral part of Cambodia that it’s difficult to imagine life in this country without them. The Tonle Sap alone--South-East Asia’s largest lake--boasts an incredible 200+ different species; and judging from the local markets, they are all exploited for food.
Incessant fishing is depleting the fresh-water stocks that Cambodians have depended on for centuries, but fishermen and women alone are not to blame. Farmers, dam-builders, politicians, law-makers, and law-breakers share responsibility for a situation not unlike that of a ticking time-bomb, with both ecological and economical repercussions that could prove devastating, if steps are not taken to remedy the crisis.
