Betel Nut
Both decorative and detrimental, betel nut palms (Areca catechu) are a permanent fixture at many a home in the Cambodian countryside; but also feature in urban landscape.
While men turn to tobacco, women—primarily the elderly—get a buzz from betel nut. Men normally harvest the nuts; women are involved with the preparation, sale, and ultimate consumption of the stimulant.
