These docile bees, that can often be found in towns and villages, readily take flight when disturbed, and are under constant threat of pillage by opportunistic villagers who harvest this Dwarf Honeybee species for its honey and larvae. Apis florea honey is a highly prized commodity in Cambodia. As a result, the non-sustainable exploitation of these bees is—though not scientifically documented in the country—almost certainly having a negative impact on the local population of these important pollinators.
At one time, Bees Unlimited helped to promote sustainable harvesting of Apis florea by introducing villagers to alternative harvesting methods.
